Why does my radiator have cold patches, especially at the bottom?Cold patches at the bottom of your radiator are usually a sign of sludge buildup. Over time, debris and rust particles accumulate in your system, settling at the bottom of the radiator and obstructing the flow of hot water. This results in the top part of the radiator being hot while the bottom remains cold. We would recommend a power flush of the system to remove this sludge and restore the efficiency of your heating system. If you need assistance, we are here to help you with all your plumbing needs, ensuring your home stays warm and comfortable.
-
Why is the top of my radiators colder? Is there a problem with my heating system? In most cases, the answer is no. The most likely cause of a radiator being cold at the top and hot at the bottom is air that has built up in the top. The simple way to fix this is to bleed the radiators using a radiator bleed key. This will vent the air from the radiator, and you should feel the top of the radiator become hot again. One thing to remember is, if you have a pressurised system (one with a filling loop to add water), you may need to top up the pressure after the radiators have been bled. If you find that you have to bleed the radiators frequently (more than a couple of times a year), this may indicate an issue with the system. If you have concerns, give us a call, and we would be happy to take a look and see what the problem is.

-
How can I prevent frozen pipes in winter? To prevent frozen pipes in winter, insulate exposed pipes, keep your home adequately heated, and ensure outside taps are insulated. If possible, isolate outside taps internally and leave them fully on so that if they do freeze, the ice can expand out of the tap rather than breaking the pipes or joints.
-

-
What is a magnetic filter and do i need one on my heating system?A magnetic filter helps protect your boiler or heating appliance. It does this by catching the magnetic particles, such as rust and magnetite which comes from the rest of the heating system (usually the radiators) as they slowly corrode. All new boiler installations have to have a magnetic filter or dirt separator fitted to comply with new building regulations. If you have an older boiler and you dont have a magnetic filter on your system it is strongly advised that you get one installed (especially if you have a combi boiler) There are various different options to choose from. Give us a call and we would be happy to discuss the possibilities and fit one on your system.
-
How long does a typical plumbing repair take?It varies depending on the issue, but most repairs are completed within 1-2 hours. We provide estimated timelines after assessment.
-
Will power flushing definitely clean my system and 100% fix all the problems?Power flushing is a highly effective method for cleaning your central heating system. It removes substantial amounts of sludge, rust, and other debris that accumulate in your pipes and radiators over time. The process can significantly improve the efficiency of your heating system, potentially extending its lifespan and reducing energy costs. However, while power flushing can address many underlying issues and greatly enhance system performance, it is not a guaranteed solution for all problems. Some issues, such as damaged components or severe corrosion, may require additional repairs or replacements. We will thoroughly assess your heating system before and after the power flush to identify any persisting problems and recommend the best course of action to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
-
How do I maintain my plumbing system properly?Inspect pipework regularly and fix leaks promptly, avoiding flushing anything other than loo roll. These among other things can prolong your plumbing systems' lifespan.
